Friday August 21st Friendship River

Saugeen First Nation is the sixth stop on our Inroads Festival tour.  This community is part of the Ojibway First Nation which, from time immemorial, covered the entire Bruce Peninsula and beyond.  This beautiful landscape was home to plentiful fishing and hunting grounds and the Ojibway people lived in balance with the ecosystem they inhabited.  They responded to the constantly changing environment, and moved with the changing seasons to make winter camps in Cape Croker and Owen Sound.  Today, much of this beauty still remains in the Saugeen First Nation, one of the greatest features of the community being the Saugeen River.  In addition to its natural wonders, this community also boast beautiful structures such as the Recreation Centre and the Saugeen First Nation Amphitheatre, which overlooks the winding Saugeen River.  On the bank of the river, in large letters, is spelled out the word "Friendship", indicating a wish by this community to share with each other and with the world at large this beautiful landscape.

In this spirit, this concert is entitled "Friendship River", and all the activities of the day will support this theme.  From 2 to 4 PM a gathering will be held in the Recreation Centre where residents and visitors to the community are invited to share stories about the river and it's place in their hearts, and then contribute to the writing of a song based around these experiences.  At 7PM, a special concert will take place at the Amphitheatre, which will feature sets of music from the visiting bands, as well as a performance by the Saugeen First Nations' own, The Sap Suckers!  The finale of the concert will be a performance of the new song!

We hope to see you there!
