Thursday August 20th The Treasured Light of Chantry Island

Southampton is the fifth stop on our Inroads Festival tour.  It is being presented in conjunction with Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, which is not only a spectacular meeting place in the heart of the county, but a protector and exhibitor of the wonders and history of the region as a whole!  The town of Southampton itself is home to a great many wonders as well, most notably Chantry Island, which houses not only a magnificent and historic lighthouse, but also a wild bird sanctuary that is an important stop for a great many winged travelers on their long trips north and south every year.

This year is the 150th anniversary of the Chantry Island lighthouse, and to celebrate we are collaborating with the Museum and community leaders to bring to Southampton "The Treasured Light of Chantry Island".  This concert will not only feature music inspired by the stoic lighthouse, but it will celebrate the island as a whole by including talks by bird experts, as well as leaders in the Chantry Island Lighthouse restoration project.  Proceeds from the concert will go towards these restoration efforts, as well as to the good folks at the Museum, who daily celebrate the not only current wonders of the area, but special aspects of its recent and ancient past.

An afternoon gathering will take place in the Bruce Gallery between 3 to 5 PM, with residents of Southampton being invited to share their experiences of, and thoughts on, the island, and contribute to the writing of a new song based on these Chantry Island accounts.  An evening performance in the Bruce Power Theatre will begin at 7 PM and will include sets of songs by the visiting artists, talks by people closest to the island, and a concert finale that will feature a performance of a brand new song created to honour the special place that Chantry Island occupies in the minds of residents and visitors to Southampton.  Both the Bruce Gallery and the Bruce Power Theatre are located in The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre.

We hope to see you there!
